Cherry blossom, mandu

Welcome to the Cherry Blossom project

You are invited to take part in the Cherry Blossom Project.

This is an installation of hand stitched mandus (Korean dumplings), which has already been exhibited at the Garden Museum, London and the Phoenix Art Space, Brighton during 2026. The next exhibition will be at the Oriental Museum in Durham from 3rd April to 6th June 2027. There were over 4,000 mandus at the 2026 exhibitions with contributions from the UK and 20 other countries. Would you like to be part of this project that links so many of us together around the world?

The project is inspired by the popularity of Cherry blossom festivals that take place in far eastern countries that brings people together to celebrate the arrival of spring. People gather to sit beneath the trees to share food and experience the fleeting beauty of the blossoming trees.

When you register for this project you will a kit of naturally dyed Korean silk fabrics and instructions to create your own string of blossom. There are two Youtube videos that demonstrate how to make the mandus if you prefer to follow along with instructions that way.

Korean Mandus (Dumpling strings) are often made to give to friends with a written message of good wishes wrapped within one of the dumplings. They can also be used to contain a personal message or affirmation. At the end of the project, you collect your labelled mandu from the installation or choose to have it posted back to you.

The project is proud to be supported by the British Korean Society who have kindly sponsored the material costs of the project.
